As part of the Zero Emission Vehicle Strategy, each state and territory government in Australia has various incentives to offer electric vehicle purchasers. Western Australia does not offer any financial incentives to buy an EV other than reduced electricity rates for charging at home during off-peak times. Qld, Vic, and NSW are offering a $3,000 rebate under certain limits; Vic and South Australia are charging a levy of between 2c to 2.5c per km. The goal for most states and territories is to have EVs at 100% of new car sales by 2035; it is noticeable that the longest stated goal was the ACT itself, where it seems to be aiming for 2050.
These incentives are a very timely and important change especially now that the price of petrol hits new highs all over Australia. It will be important that for a larger take-up of EVs the market price of EVs need to be reduced compared to standard fuel cars, and also to increase the infrastructure of charging stations
For the incentives to cover your own state, see the ABC News’ article on the finer detail of the EV-related incentives at this link.
